LUSAKA, 20th DECEMBER, 2017 – THE INDEPENDENT BROADCASTING AUTHORITY (IBA) ANNOUNCES AN EXTENSION OF THE DEADLINE FOR SUBMITTING APPLICATIONS FOR RADIO BROADCASTING SERVICES

The Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) wishes to announce an extension of the deadline for submission of applications for Radio broadcasting services.

The initial deadline was today, December 20th 2017. The extension will now be up to January 15th, 2018.

Authority Director General, Josephine Mapoma has said that the IBA has received numerous requests to extend the deadline. She said, “We have received numerous requests from applicants to extend the deadline for submissions of applications for radio broadcasting services. We realise that some of the information that we seek from applicants may require more time for consolidation and if we do not extend the deadline, we risk disadvantaging communities that need to apply for Radio licences. We have therefore extended the deadline to 15th January, 2018 to allow applicants to perfect their documentation”.

Ms. Mapoma reiterated the Authority’s commitment to transparency in the process of issuing licences, adding that, “We operate an open-door policy and are eager to serve our stakeholders better. Therefore, when the applicants complained about the challenges they were having in accessing and consolidating some of the data, we opted to extend the deadline”. She added that there is still an information gap between the urban and rural areas and that if the extension is not made possible, the people in the underserviced rural areas may lose out.

In October, the IBA announced the opening of 32 new frequencies for radio broadcasting services under the Commercial, Community / Religious categories across the country.
