PRESS STATEMENT

IBA SUSPENDS MUVI TV, KOMBONI RADIO AND RADIO ITEZHI TEZHI BROADCASTING LICENCES

Lusaka, 22nd August 2016 – The Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) Board met this morning the 22nd of August 2016 and resolved to with immediate effect suspend broadcasting licences for Muvi TV, Komboni Radio and Radio ltezhi Tezhi. This follows the unprofessional conduct in which the three broadcasting stations have conducted themselves in the recent past, which has posed a risk to national peace and stability.

The suspension has been done under Section 29 ( 1) (j) of the IBA Amendment Act of 2010, which provides that, “The Board may cancel broadcasting licence if the cancellation of the licence is necessary in the interest of public safety, security, peace, welfare or good order”.

The Authority has observed that before, during and after the August 11, 2016 elections, Muvi TV, Komboni Radio and Radio ltezhi Tezhi have been conducting themselves in an unprofessional manner contrary to the provisions of the IBA Act. It has therefore become necessary for the Authority to suspend the licences for the three stations in the public interest.

The parties may appeal against the decision of the Board pursuant to section
31 (1) of the IBA Amendment Act of 2010 which provides that, “a person who is aggrieved with the decision of the Board under this part may appeal to the Minister within thirty days”.

The IBA further wishes to caution broadcasting houses that it will not hesitate to take decisive action against any broadcaster found to be unprofessional in their broadcast.
